Bluetooth & Connectivity

Badge not appearing in the scan list

Symptom The scan runs but the device list is empty or the badge is not shown
Check first Badge is powered on · Badge is in pairing mode · Bluetooth is enabled · Phone is within ~5 m
Cause A Badge is not in pairing mode
Fix A Press the badge button once — the blue light flashes and a 20-second pairing window opens. Scan again within that window
Cause B Android permission not granted (Nearby devices is required for BLE scanning)
Fix B Go to Settings → Apps → Pay Buddy Pro → Permissions and enable Nearby devices
Cause C Another phone is connected to the badge
Fix C Disconnect the badge from the other device, then retry

Scan ends without finding any devices

Symptom The scan stops after 20 seconds with no results and a Scan again button
Cause A Badge is out of range, powered off, or its pairing window closed
Fix A Move the badge within a few metres, press its button once to re-open the pairing window, and tap Scan again
Cause B Bluetooth stack issue on the phone
Fix B Toggle Bluetooth off and back on, then retry

Bluetooth permission denied

Symptom A Bluetooth Access Denied dialog appears over the scan screen and scanning is blocked
Cause The Bluetooth / Nearby devices permission was denied
Fix — iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth, find Pay Buddy Pro, toggle it on
Fix — Android Settings → Apps → Pay Buddy Pro → Permissions → Nearby devices and allow

Tip

Tap Open Settings on the dialog to jump straight to the right page, or Close to dismiss it and stay on the scan screen. When you return with permission granted, scanning resumes automatically.

"Bluetooth is Off" dialog appears during scan or sync

Symptom A dialog says Bluetooth is switched off
Cause Bluetooth is disabled at the OS level
Fix Turn Bluetooth on from Control Centre / Quick Settings or Settings → Bluetooth

Important

If you turn Bluetooth back on while the dialog is open, it closes automatically and a fresh scan (or sync) restarts from the beginning. If you tap Close instead, the scan list is cleared (or the sync is cancelled).

Sync Issues

Sync fails or is interrupted

Symptom Sync progress stops and a failure screen explains the cause
Check first Badge is still in range · App is in the foreground · Screen is on · No incoming call
Cause A Badge moved out of BLE range during transfer
Fix A Keep the phone within 1–2 m of the badge for the whole sync, then tap Back to Edit Image and tap Sync to Device to try again
Cause B App was backgrounded or the screen locked, suspending Bluetooth
Fix B Keep Pay Buddy Pro in the foreground. On Android, allow it to run unrestricted in Settings → Battery
Cause C An incoming call or the app being killed interrupted the connection
Fix C End the call (or reopen the app), tap Back to Edit Image, and tap Sync to Device to try again

Sync completes but the badge display doesn't update

Symptom The app shows "Sync Complete" but the badge still shows the old image
Cause A The display hasn't refreshed yet
Fix A Wait 3–5 seconds after success for the e-ink screen to redraw
Cause B The badge is showing a different slot than the one written
Fix B Hold the badge button for 2 seconds to advance through stored photos until the new image appears
Cause C E-ink refresh didn't trigger
Fix C Power-cycle the badge; the display refreshes on restart

Wrong image appears on the badge after sync

Symptom The badge shows an unexpected image
Cause The intended slot wasn't selected on the Choose a Slot sheet
Fix Re-sync and carefully select the intended slot (1–6) before tapping Sync to a Slot

Images & Editor

"Unsupported File Format" message when importing

Symptom A message appears after selecting an image, offering Try Again / Cancel
Cause The file isn't JPEG or PNG (e.g. HEIC, GIF, WebP)
Fix — iOS Open the photo in Photos → Share → Save to Files (converts HEIC to JPEG), then import the saved JPEG
Fix — Android Confirm the file is .jpg or .png; convert with any image app if needed

Import rejected for size

Symptom The image won't open in the editor
Cause The file exceeds the 20 MB import limit
Fix Resize or re-export the image under 20 MB, then import again

Saved image limit reached

Symptom A Save Image Limit message appears when saving
Cause The 30-image saved library is full
Fix Open the Saved tab, delete one or more images (single or multi-select), then save again

Image colours look different on the badge

Symptom Colours in the editor appear changed or simplified on the badge
Cause The badge is a four-colour e-ink display (black, white, red, yellow). Your image is converted to those four colours at sync time using dithering
Fix No fix needed — this is expected. Your saved image keeps its original colours; only the synced copy is converted. For best results, choose images with strong contrast

Text overlay hard to read on the badge

Symptom Text added in the editor is hard to read after syncing
Cause Low contrast between the text colour and the background after four-colour conversion
Fix Use a high-contrast text colour (black on a light area, white on a dark area) and place it over a clear part of the image

App & Permissions

App crashes on launch

Cause Corrupt local data or incomplete installation
Fix Force-close and reopen. If it persists, uninstall, reinstall from the store, and reopen

Name is rejected

Symptom An inline error appears when typing a profile or device name
Cause The name contains unsupported characters (emoji, line breaks, special symbols) or duplicates an existing name
Fix Use only letters, numbers, and spaces (English or Chinese), up to 50 characters, and make it unique

Device limit reached

Symptom A Device Limit Reached message appears when adding a badge ("You've reached the maximum limit of 100 devices. Remove an existing device to add a new one.")
Cause The 100-device limit has been reached
Fix Open the Users tab, remove a badge you no longer use, then add the new one

Can't wipe data or remove a device

Symptom An "operation in progress" message blocks Wipe All Local Data or device removal
Cause A sync, import, save, or edit is still running
Fix Wait for the active operation to finish (or let the sync complete/fail), then try again

Language change not taking effect

Symptom After changing language, parts of the app still show the old language
Cause Rare — certain OS configurations may need a restart to fully apply the locale
Fix Force-close the app and reopen it
